Ismail Elfath did not lose control of England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina because he failed to identify fouls. He lost control because he repeatedly identified them without applying the disciplinary consequences that should have followed.
Argentina committed 12 fouls in the first half alone, compared with England’s seven. Yet Elfath issued only two yellow cards before the interval: one to England’s Elliot Anderson and one to Argentina’s Lisandro Martínez. (The Independent)
